Johannes Richter and Anna Marie Kreutzer

Both Johannes (John) Richter and Anna Marie (also known as Mary or Anna) Kreutzer were born in Bavaria, Germany – Johannes on March 17, 1817 and Anna in September of 1826.   They both arrived in New York City around 1847 and were married in St. Francis of Assisi Church in New York City on November 13, 1848.  By 1860 they had settled in Fosters Meadow on Fosters Meadow Road in what was then known as Springfield (in the 20th century the area was renamed Rosedale).  Johannes was a farmer who in 1880 owned 10 tilled acres, three horses, two cows and grew crops of corn and potatoes.

Both Johannes and Anna Marie lived out the rest of their lives on Fosters Meadow Road.  Johann died on September 17, 1888 and Anna Marie died September 13, 1900.  Both Johann and Anna Marie are buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.

A 1935 anniversary announcement for Johann and Anna Marie’s son, George notes that the Richters were among the first (German) settlers of Rosedale.

My research indicates Johannes and Anna Marie had 75 grandchildren!

Johannes and Anna Marie had at least eight children, as follows:

  • John Richter (1852-1921) John Richter was born in January, 1852 in New York City.  Records indicate he was a truck farmer in Fosters Meadow for many years before moving to Jamesport, New York around 1916 where he was a well-known farmer.  His farm was located on Manor Lane in Jamesport.

John married first, Johanna Felten (1849-1887) at St. Boniface on February 10, 1874.  Johanna was born on August 6, 1849 on Long Island, and moved with her family to Fosters Meadow around the age of 11.  Johanna died on July 27, 1887 in Fosters Meadow a few months after the birth of her eighth child.  I believe Johanna is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, but have been unable to confirm this.

After Johanna’s death, John married Rose Jankowska (1864-1945).  Rose was born in Poland on August 14, 1864.  She and John had an additional four children.  Rose died in 1945 in Queens and is buried in St. Johns Cemetery in Riverhead.

John Richter died on October 27, 1921 in Riverhead and is buried in St. John’s Cemetery, Riverhead.

  • Anna Richter (1854–1943) Anna was born on January 9, 1854 in New York City and baptized in St. John the Baptist Church, New York City on January 15, 1854.  Anna married Frederick Reisert (1853-1929) in St. Boniface on February 8, 1876.  Anna died in Elmont on February 28, 1943 and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.  Frederick was born in Kleindeutschland, New York City on July 4, 1853, died in Valley Stream on January 10, 1929 and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.  Frederick and Anna were successful farmers.  Anna and Frederick had 17 children.

  • Mary (Maria) Richter (1856-1927)  Mary was born in New York City on January 24, 1856.  She was baptized “Maria Anna” on January 27, 1856 in St. John the Baptist Church, New York City.  She died on August 25, 1927 at her home in Melville where she had lived for 22 years.  On January 11, 1876 she married George Reinhardt in St. Boniface.  George was born in May, 1853 in New York City.  He died on November 27, 1922 in Melville.  Records indicate Mary and George are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Amityville, but I am having difficulty confirming this information.  (Mary may have been married previously to Fuchs).

  • George Richter (1858-1940) George was born January 4, 1859 in Springfield.  He died on February 3, 1940 in Rosedale.  On February 9, 1885 in St. Boniface Church he married Katherina (Katie) Morgenthaler, born August 22, 1870 in New York City, died February 21, 1947 in Jamaica, Queens.  George was a farmer in Queens.  Both George and Katherina are buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.  They had at least six children, and a newspaper article published in 1935 reporting a 50th anniversary party held by their children indicates they had three grandchildren.

  • Jacob Richter (1862-1927) Jacob was born on April 10, 1860 in Springfield.  He was the first Richter baby baptized in St. Boniface.  Jacob was a farmer in Queens. He died on December 7, 1927, probably in Ozone Park.  On May 29, 1888 he married Margaret Hoppenhauer in St. Boniface.  Margaret was born on October 14, 1869 in New York and died on July 13, 1937, also probably in Ozone Park.  Both Jacob and Margaret lived their adult lives in the Fosters Meadow area and are buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Elmont.

  • Magdalena Richter (1863-1938) Magdalena “Lena” Richter was born on June 22, 1863 in Springfield and baptized at St. Boniface on July 5, 1863.  On April 24, 1883 in St. Boniface, Lena married Henry Zimmerman (1856-1948).  Henry Zimmerman was born on May 14, 1856 in Islip. Both Henry and Magdalena grew up in Fosters Meadow.  Henry farmed on Three Mile Mill Road in Fosters Meadow and he and Lena had 15 children over the next 24 years. By 1915 they had moved with their children to Riverhead, and in 1918 lived on Jamesport Road in Riverhead.  By 1920 they owned a farm on Peconic Blvd in Riverhead.

Lena passed away in Riverhead on January 1, 1938.  Henry passed away at the age of 91 on February 24, 1948 in Southampton.  Both Henry and Magdalena are buried in St. John’s Cemetery in Riverhead.

  • Elizabeth (Lizzie) Richter was born on May 1, 1865, in Springfield and was baptized in St. Boniface on May 14, 1865.  On January 27, 1885 in St. Boniface she married Frank (Franz) Felten.  Frank worked as a farmer in Fosters Meadow.  Elizabeth died on November 20, 1938 in Lakeview, NY and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.  Frank Felten was born on June 1, 1862 in Fosters Meadow.  Frank died on April 2, 1949, probably in Lakeview and is also buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.

  • Christian Richter (1871-1898) was born on June 21, 1872 in Springfield and was baptized in St. Boniface on July 7, 1872.  On February 12, 1895 in St. Boniface Church he married Margaret Dubon.  Margaret was born on April 7, 1872 in Springfield Gardens.  Christian died of diphtheria in Rosedale on July 22, 1898 at the age of 26.  Christian is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery.   After Christian’s death, Margaret married Christian’s nephew, John Richter.  Margaret died on August 13, 1925 in Rosedale and is buried in Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea Cemetery in Lawrence, NY.

July/Aug 1885/d. probably September 1975 in Essex, NJ/burial possibly St. Boniface Cemetery.  Jennie’s name is on the stone with George’s, but no date of death.  Perhaps because Jennie died in New Jersey so long after George and there were no children, whoever was in charge of her burial may not have known about the St. Boniface plot, so she may be buried elsewhere.
  2. Charles J. Richter b. August 3, 1887, Rosedale/d. November 10, 1961, Centerport/buried St. Boniface Cemetery. Charles served in WWI.  Married October 6, 1930 in Hempstead Ada R. Nies b. 6. Christopher Richter b. 1922.  Very little information is found on Christopher other than the 1940 census where he is listed as being 18 years of age and living with Katherine Richter and it is indicated he is her “son”.  This is a little confusing as Katherine is 52 years older than Christopher and he is not listed with the family in the 1925 or 1930 census.  The 1940 census indicates that at that time he was 18 and “unable to work” – which according to the census directions means “persons physically unable to work because of permanent disability, old age, or chronic illness.”
